PFA Roll Covers
PFA (perfluoroalkoxy alkane) heat-shrink roll covers from Fluoron’s Fluoro-Flex system. Translucent, high-temperature, FDA-compliant, and engineered for calender rolls, hot size press, food-contact lines, and any roll where service temperatures push past what FEP can handle. Custom engineered to your roll dimensions.
Why PFA for your rolls
PFA is the premium grade in the fluoropolymer family. It delivers PTFE-class chemistry with significantly higher continuous service temperature plus the flex-fatigue resistance you need on calender stacks and high-load roll positions. Choose PFA when:
- Service temperatures run between 375°F and 500°F continuous (190°C to 260°C)
- You need flex-fatigue resistance for calender, supercalender, or high-load positions
- FDA food contact compliance is required at elevated temperatures
- You are running aggressive chemistry that requires PTFE-class resistance at heat
- FEP would survive the chemistry but cannot hold up to the temperature

Where PFA roll covers fit best
- Calender and supercalender rolls running at elevated temperatures under high web pressure
- Hot size press applications where FEP would soften at the operating temperature
- Food-contact processing rolls at elevated temperatures (baking, hot extrusion, hot lamination)
- Aggressive chemistry rolls running solvent, acid, or caustic at elevated temperature
- Flex-fatigue critical positions where the cover sees repeated nip pressure cycles
If your service temperature stays at or below 375°F continuous, FEP roll covers (Fluoro-Clear) are a cleaner economic answer. For maximum wear resistance at lower temperatures, PTFE roll covers (Fluoro-Wear) fit better. Static-sensitive lines should look at conductive PTFE (Fluoro-Stat).
Frequently asked
What is a PFA roll cover and when do I need one instead of FEP?
PFA is a higher-grade fluoropolymer than FEP, with the same chemical resistance and release but a higher continuous service temperature (500°F vs 375°F for FEP) and better flex-fatigue resistance. Choose PFA when your application runs hotter than 375°F continuous or when calender-stack flex cycles would fatigue an FEP cover. PFA also tolerates aggressive chemistry at elevated temperatures better than FEP.
How does PFA compare to PTFE for roll covers?
PFA and PTFE have nearly identical chemical resistance and release properties. PTFE is opaque white and has slightly better wear resistance and higher upper temperature tolerance. PFA can be melt-processed into clear or translucent heat-shrink film, while PTFE roll covers are typically made as sintered tubes. For high-temperature calender service, PFA’s flex-fatigue resistance often outperforms PTFE. We can spec either based on your roll’s specific operating envelope.
What roll diameters and lengths does PFA heat-shrink support?
Fluoron supplies Fluoro-Flex PFA covers from 2 inches diameter up to 60+ inches, including large-diameter calender and dryer rolls. Face lengths up to roughly 300 inches are standard, with longer custom builds available. Send roll specs and we will engineer the cover to your dimensions.
Is PFA FDA compliant?
Yes. Fluoro-Flex PFA roll covers are FDA food contact compliant per 21 CFR 177.1550. Documentation available on request. PFA is particularly common in hot food-contact applications where FEP would soften.
How long do PFA roll covers last in calender service?
Service life on calender stacks depends heavily on nip pressure, surface speed, and temperature. We have documented Fluoro-Flex PFA covers running 18 to 60 months in calender service before replacement, and we track each installation to inform future specs. Send the roll details and we will give you a service life estimate for your application.
Can PFA be installed onsite, or does the roll need to ship to Fluoron?
Both. We do most PFA installations in our shop with full QA, but for large-diameter or in-place rolls we mobilize onsite installation crews. Tell us whether the roll can be removed and we will recommend the cleanest path.
